9:30 AM - 10:30 AM
The Network Industry is changing quite fast; new proposals and dramatically new concepts are everywhere. How practical are these ideas? What is the likelihood that they will be deployed in networks? Perhaps most importantly, what is the impact on network operator jobs, job descriptions and roles if these ideas come to pass? "The DKNOG association was founded in 2009 with the goal of providing a social platform to further the exchange of knowledge within the Danish networking industry." But, going forward, what knowledge makes sense for operators? How should it be acquired? This talk will attempt to shed some light on the directions that networking might take in the future, and the type of knowledge/skillsets that would be needed.

1:30 PM - 2:00 PM
There are somewhere between 35-50 so-called SD-WAN vendors out there, and since it is a buzzword and not a technology, it is a bit of a jungle to figure out what to expect from a product labelled "SD-WAN". This talk aims to clarify this, by looking at some of the marked leaders, killing some myths and getting to the core of what to expect from an SD-WAN solution.

SDN Controllers in the WAN
(DKNOG9)
Julian Lucek
(Juniper Networks)
2:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Some operators have recently been deploying SDN Controllers in the WAN for the first time. This presentation discusses the protocols needed to underpin a quasi-real-time SDN Controller for the WAN, and the major applications of such controllers. The flow of the presentation is as follows: How an SDN Controller gains visibility of the network, using the following ingredients (i) BGP-LS for topology discovery, including attributes of physical links such as bandwidth and metrics. This will include a discussion of how a controller gains visibility across multiple AS’s, in the case of multiple-AS networks, (ii) Streaming telemetry for link and LSP statistics and link latency data (iii) Status of traffic-engineered LSPs via PCEP How an SDN Controller instantiates or modifies RSVP or Segment-Routed traffic-engineered LSPs across the network. Closed Loop Automation, for example (i) Automated traffic management, by moving LSPs if congestion is detected (ii) automatically rerouting low-latency LSPs if the latency on a link is detected as having increased (iii) automatically rerouting LSPs if a fault is detected in a link or node

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Understanding BNG Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) is the access point for subscribers, through which they connect to the broadband network. When a connection is established between BNG and Customer Premise Equipment (CPE),the subscriber can access the broadband services provided by the Network Service Provide (NSP) or Internet Service Provider (ISP). BNG establishes and manages subscriber sessions. When a session is active, BNG aggregates traffic from various subscriber sessions from an access network, and routes it to the network of the service provider. The BNG effectively manages subscriber access, and subscriber management functions such as: • Authentication, authorization and accounting of subscriber sessions • Address assignment • Security • Policy management • Quality of Service (QoS) This talk will go through some of the design considerations when deploying a BNG function to a network.

4:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Transmission speed of 400G is becoming a reality, with new challenges for optical and electrical components in high speed systems emerging as well. PAM4 modulation is one key component for 400G transmission with transceivers following Ethernet IEEE 802.3bs, this talk will be a show and tell into PAM4. With this knowledge, the design decisions behind the new formfactors OSFP, QSFP-DD, SFP56-DD and µQSFP are easier to understand. This talk will help you to: Design / build new kind of applications or connections with your networking gear in the field 100G will no longer be the fast option for IXP interconnections soon DR, FR4 and LR4 at 400G will be available Avoid pitfalls when designing your racks Be aware how power consumption and new plugs will be part of the new world of 400G transceivers.

Can we bridge the gap between industry and academia?
(DKNOG9)
Silvia Saldana Cercos
(Telia Denmark)
4:45 PM - 5:15 PM
Is high education a benefit or a drawback when working in the telecom industry? Is the academia providing the students with the necessary tools to understand what happens in the real world? What to look for when hiring a new employee? Do we, in the industry, exploit the tools, and energy from young students who look at the industry with new fresh eyes? Are industry and research too far from each to actually find any synergies between these two worlds? This talk aims to tackle these questions from a person who has had a foot in both worlds. The idea is not providing statements of truth, but rather share few reflections that could inspire new students defining their next step forward, challenge current ways of working of our colleagues on the industry, help hiring managers to define the profiles that will fulfill the tasks in the best way possible, and maybe serve as an eye opener to find potential new win-win situations.

Peering is a great way to improve network performance and save on transit charges, but peering interfaces also can expose your network and make it vulnerable to attack. This talk addresses best practices for securing your peering sessions and a few tips for getting the most benefit from peering. The talk addresses routing security, port security, and talks about free tools from Hurricane Electric at he.net that can help with the tasks.

1:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Flowspec is by all means not a new invention to handle DDoS and volumetric based threats. In one way or another been around as a feature since 2008-2009. But never got the attraction and little vanished as a tool and concept... untill now. Implementations today mostly design to direct suspicious flows by direct certian prefixes to central located scrubber site for filtering and actions. The design to achive this mostly ref to as "Onramp&Offramp" which involves MPLS controlplanes and segmentation of traffic. Flowspec offers a greater toolbox now with not just redirect, but also drop, shape or lower the service for suspected flows already on the edge. This session aims to explain the Flowspec from design and develop to a ready product with all its experience. A Flowspec rule is much more than just ACL installed by BGP !

2:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Providers are often challenged by the cost and complexity of traditional DDoS protection systems, resulting in partial solutions which are a fraction of their transit/peering capacity and are slow and manual in their operation. High-performance traffic filtering and telemetry in the latest generation of edge routers is opening up new opportunities for security policy enforcement, including enabling real-time DDoS protection at a scale and low cost of ownership not previously possible.
